A generous legacy was left by Judith Campbell Smyth to benefit CPRE causes and projects in her beloved countryside.

‘Judith was a lady of the sea, who followed in her father’s naval footsteps, first as a Wren in the Women’s Royal Naval Service and, then, in a 30-year career with P&O, reaching the senior position of Purser on cruiseliners such as Canberra and Sea Princess,’ says her godson and executor, Jeremy Chandler Browne.

‘She loved travel and visited many countries. But her home was always Hove, East Sussex, and she had a great love of local nature, art and culture.’

Jeremy’s mother, Judith’s lifelong friend Susan Browne, adds:

‘Throughout her life, Judith was a great lover of the countryside. When we were children we’d cycle from Hove to the Downs for picnics. She loved walking and regularly walked in the area with the Sussex Downsmen (now the South Downs Society). No matter where Judith went in the world, she loved to come home to East Sussex.’
