- We were instrumental in the creation of National Parks – our campaign began in the 1930s (watch our campaign film below). Most recently, we successfully campaigned for the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales National Park extensions and to secure the widest possible boundary for the South Downs National Park, which was designated in 2009.
- We have drawn public and political attention to the variety of threats facing National Parks, AONBs and locally valued landscapes by seeking evidence from our network of CPRE county branches. Most recently, we published Going, Going, Gone? England’s disappearing landscapes based on proposals for housing, transport, energy and tourist development in valued landscapes.
- CPRE developed a toolkit to help communities record what’s special about their local landscape character. We have worked closely with Natural England to promote their National Character Area profiles, which provide both a strong evidence base to underpin local planning policy and a summary of opportunities for the future management of an area. Our county branches have arranged three seminars to help promote the profiles to local councils and policy makers.
- Most recently, we coordinated the development of Landscapes for Everyone: Creating a better future which was supported by 33 national and regional organisations and aimed to raise the profile of landscape in the run up to the election.
