CPRE groups around England are campaigning against proposals for new opencast mines. Some of these are in Green Belt areas, Special Areas of Conservation, Sites of Special Scientific Interest and Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty. They have brought detailed evidence to a number of inquiries.

West Yorkshire opencast mine victory
Recently, our campaigners in CPRE West Yorkshire achieved a major campaign success when the Coalition Government announced that it would uphold the decision to reject an appeal for an opencast mine outside Leeds.

Peak power - small scale energy generation
We have also published a guide on renewable energy for rural communities which highlights communities that have harnessed clean, green energy to reduce emissions and bills while generating income for other community projects. CPRE's branch in the Peak District has demonstrated the potential of small-scale hydro power for rivers and streams with in its own report, Peak Power.
